Saint Francis of Assisi

The Patron

Today is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, or what's known in secular circles as World Animal Day. What a perfect occasion for me to start a blog. I'm so glad you're here.

In this space, I plan to share a peek into the studio at Mule Mountain Press. In that spirit, today I give you Saint Francis, as a work in progress.

I will admit, I am not Catholic. But that doesn't stop me from celebrating this popular friar and animal lover from the thirteenth century. Francis believed in the divinity of nature and all creatures. He even preached to the animals, according to legend. It is said they would gather voluntarily to hear his gospel. In my illustration, I draw a scenario that's perhaps a bit more realistic, where the animals stick around for the grub—communion wafers.

In any case, Saint Francis certainly pointed us in the right direction. Let us feast today in reverence for our brothers and sisters, the animals.
